Click conversions: the check
We flag a Google Ads conversion whose trigger is a click (gtm.click, gtm.linkClick, a click condition, or an event named like click, cta or button), unless the click is a phone, email, SMS or WhatsApp link. On 4 Nov 2026, 102 of 225 B2B SaaS sites with Google Ads conversions (45.3%) fired one on a non-contact click. The biggest group was CTA clicks such as "Start free trial" and "Book a demo": 22.7% of sites.
Static rescan of 349 domains, 225 with Google Ads conversion tags, 4 Nov 2026. Full breakdown by click target.
What we detect
A click trigger is any of: the built-in click events, a condition on Click Text, Click URL, Click Classes or Click ID, or a custom event whose name contains click, cta or button. We drop it when the clicked link is tel:, mailto:, sms:, WhatsApp or a click-to-call, because those are real lead actions. Score: −10.
| What was clicked | Sites | Share of 225 |
|---|---|---|
| CTA (get started, start free trial, book a demo, pricing, links to signup) | 51 | 22.7% |
| Content (download, watch, install, event registration) | 22 | 9.8% |
| A form's submit button | 14 | 6.2% |
| Log in, Continue with Google or SSO | 11 | 4.9% |
| App store or marketplace link | 7 | 3.1% |
| Only a CSS class, element ID or vague event name | 43 | 19.1% |
A site can be in more than one row. Phone and email clicks (11 sites) are not in the 102.
A real example
From the scan in our sample report (4 Nov 2026, labels shortened):
Ads label iDOYCN… : event gtm.click, click on 'Start your free trial' Ads label iDOYCN… : event gtm.click, click on 'Try it free' Ads label AR0OCK… : event gtm.click, click on 'Book a Demo' Ads label AR0OCK… : event gtm.click, click on 'Book a call'
Each click counts before the visitor has seen the form. Someone who clicks "Book a Demo", looks at the calendar and leaves is a conversion.
Why it hurts Smart Bidding
A click is intent. Many more people click a CTA than finish the form behind it, so a primary click conversion teaches bidding to find clickers. A submit-button click is closer, but it also fires when the form fails validation. If both the click and the finished signup are primary, one person counts twice.
How to fix it
- Replace each click conversion with what the click leads to: form submitted (a success event), meeting booked, trial started.
- For a submit button, use the form tool's success event or GTM's form submission trigger with Check Validation on.
- Keep CTA clicks as GA4 events or secondary Ads actions for reporting.
- Keep phone and email clicks if calls and emails are real leads for you; we don't flag those.
What we can't see
- Primary or secondary. That setting lives inside the Google Ads account. A flagged conversion only steers bidding if it is primary, so check it in Goals, Conversions.
- What a CSS class or element ID points at. 19.1% of sites had click triggers we could only describe by a class or ID. We list them so you can check.
- Whether the button still exists. A trigger for a removed button never fires.
FAQ
Is a click ever a good Google Ads conversion?
Phone, email and click-out links to a partner who pays you can be. A click on a button that opens a form is not: count the form.
Why do you list clicks you can't describe?
Because the trigger is only a class or ID like .btn-primary. It may be a phone link or a CTA. You can check it in GTM in a minute.
Does fixing it reduce conversions?
Yes. CTA clicks outnumber finished forms, so the count drops to the real number.
