Page-view conversions: the check

By the Fireshift team · Updated 2026-11-05

Short answer

We flag a Google Ads conversion whose trigger is only a page load (All Pages, DOM Ready, Window Loaded, History Change) with no URL condition, and one that fires on a page view of a URL that doesn't look like a thank-you or success page. We also flag GA4 key events such as page_view, session_start or scroll. On 5 Nov 2026, 29.5% of 886 sites with Google Ads conversions (31.0% of the 684 B2B SaaS ones) had at least one Ads conversion on All Pages or a plain page view.

4.7%of 886 Ads sites: a conversion on every page load (All Pages)
26.6%a conversion on a page view of a non-success URL
5.6%of 981 GA4 sites: a page_view-type key event

Static scan of 1,727 sites (B2B SaaS, ecommerce, agencies), 5 Nov 2026; base is the 886 with a readable Google Ads conversion, or the 981 with GA4. Method and limits.

What we detect

FindingRuleScore
All PagesAds conversion trigger is only page-load events (gtm.js, gtm.dom, gtm.load, History Change) with no URL, no other condition and no exception−30
Page view of a non-success URLPage-load trigger limited to a URL that has none of: thank, success, confirm, complete, welcome, booked, scheduled, order, receipt, onboard−6
GA4 page view as key eventGA4 key event named page_view, session_start, first_visit, user_engagement or scroll−25
Fired on every page (live)In a browser visit, the same Ads label fired on every page we opened−30

The URL rule is deliberately soft (−6): a page view of /pricing is noise, but a page view of /demo-booked written without the word "booked" would be a false alarm. We show the URL so you can judge it.

A real example

From the scan in our sample report (a B2B SaaS on Google Ads, 4 Nov 2026, IDs removed):

Ads label LxmXCO… in GTM-••••: All Pages
15 distinct Ads conversion labels (15 tags)

Every visit to that site counts as a conversion for that label. If the action is primary, the account reports a low cost per conversion while sales see nothing new.

Why it hurts Smart Bidding

Smart Bidding optimises toward primary conversion actions (Google Ads Help: primary and secondary actions). A conversion that every visitor triggers makes the cheapest traffic look like the best traffic, so budget drifts toward clicks that never become leads. A page view of the pricing page is a softer version of the same problem: it is interest, and bidding learns to buy interest.

How to fix it

  1. In Google Ads, set the action to Secondary today. Bidding stops using it; the history stays.
  2. In GTM, move the tag to the real success event: a form success event, a sign_up dataLayer push, or a thank-you page with an exact path.
  3. Check that the Conversion Linker and Google tag still fire on all pages. Those are meant to.
  4. For GA4, unmark page_view and similar events as key events and keep them as plain events.
  5. Expect reported conversions to drop. Full walk-through: why a conversion fires on every page.

What we can't see

  • Primary or secondary. That setting lives inside the Google Ads account. A flagged conversion only steers bidding if it is primary, so check it in Goals, Conversions.
  • Page-view conversions created inside Google Ads ("URL contains …" actions set up in the account, not in GTM). Only a live visit catches those firing.
  • Server-side tags and tags added by consent tools or non-Google loaders.

FAQ

Is a thank-you page view a valid conversion?

Yes, if it is the only place that step is counted and the URL can't be reached any other way. Reloads and shared links fire it again, so a success event is safer.

Why does the Conversion Linker fire on every page?

It is supposed to. It stores the click ID. Only conversion tags should be tied to a success event.

Will fixing it drop my conversions?

Yes, reported conversions fall because they were counting visits. Cost per conversion rises to its real level, and bidding needs one to two weeks to relearn.
