Is it OK to scan a site's tags, including competitors'?

By the Fireshift team · Updated 2026-11-05

Short answer

A scan reads what a website sends to every visitor: its HTML, its Google Tag Manager container from googletagmanager.com, and the requests a normal browser makes. That is the same thing any visitor's browser downloads. We go no further: no form submissions, no signups, no logins, no bot-detection workarounds. We don't publish findings about a named site without its agreement. This is how we work, not legal advice.

What a scan does

  • Fetches public pages, like a browser would.
  • Downloads the public tag containers those pages load.
  • In a live visit, clicks main navigation and CTA links to see what fires, and accepts the cookie banner.

What a scan never does

  • Fill in or submit forms, request demos, create accounts or log in.
  • Use stealth flags, spoof the browser to hide automation, or get around bot protection. If a site blocks headless browsers, the report says so.
  • Run on anything other than a valid domain name. Domains are checked before any request.

Competitors

A competitor's container is the same public file. Reading it tells you which actions they report to Google and what triggers each one; it doesn't show their bids, budgets, primary settings or results. We report competitor findings only to the customer who asked, and never share one company's findings with another.

Your own site

You can see exactly what we see: open https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtm.js?id=GTM-XXXXXXX with your container ID. Anything you find there is what every visitor's browser receives.

FAQ

Will a scan show up in my analytics?

The container read doesn't run your tags, so no. A live visit loads pages in a browser and can appear as a visit, like any visitor.

Can I ask you not to scan my site?

Yes. Email hello@fireshift.ai and we won't scan it again.
